VPN Full Form: Virtual Private Network

The full form of VPN is “Virtual Private Network“. VPN is a secure and private network connection through the public internet. VPN services protect your personal data, hide your IP address when you use the internet, and let you bypass censorship, content blocks, and website restrictions. Its work is basically to provide an encrypted connection between a device and network so that personal and sensitive information can be transmitted between desired people.

Types of VPN Protocols

PPTP

Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is one of the oldest and most widely used VPN protocols in existence. Developed in the mid-90s by Microsoft. It generates a tunnel and confines the data packet. Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) is used to encrypt the data between the connection.

L2TP/IPSec

L2TP or Layer 2 Tunnel Protocol is a replacement of the PPTP VPN protocol. This protocol does not provide any encryption or privacy out-of-the-box. It is often combined with another VPN security protocol like IPSec to establish a highly secure VPN connection.

OpenVPN

OpenVPN is one of the leading VPN protocols. As an open-source protocol, its source code is available for anyone to verify. It is commonly used for creating Point-to-Point and Site-to-Site connections. It uses a traditional security protocol based on SSL and TLS protocol.

SSTP

Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP) is popular due to its full integration with every Microsoft operating system since Windows Vista. The biggest drawback to SSTP is that is basically a Microsoft-developed proprietary protocol and developers do not have access to the underlying code.

IKEv2

Internet Key Exchange version 2 (IKEv2) is an efficient protocol usually combined with the IPsec protocol for security. Like OpenVPN, IKEv2 uses 256-bit encryption. This protocol is very good at re-establishing the link after temporary connection loss and excels at switching connections across network types (for example from WiFi to cellular).
