What is the full form of IPS?

IPS full form

The full form of IPS is Indian Police Service. The Indian Police Service (IPS) is one of the three All India Services of the Government of India, also known simply as the Police Service. The Indian Police Service was established in 1948. There have been many eminent IPS officers who have contributed significantly to the country, such as India’s first woman IPS officer Kiran Bedi, U Sagayam, Shivdeep Lande and many more. The controlling authority of IPS is the Ministry of Home Affairs.

IPS officers are recruited through UPSC exam. This exam is conducted every year and selected candidates choose their preferences from the top three services IAS, IFS, and IPS. There are four attempts to clear this exam for general category candidates, 7 attempts for OBC candidates and no restriction for SC/ST candidates. The following are the IPS departments you can join once you pass the IPS exam:

  • Crime Branch
  • Research and Analysis Wing (RAW)
  • Criminal Investigation Department (CID)
  • Home Guards
  • Traffic Bureau and more.

Qualification to become an IPS officer

You have to extensively study for the IPS exam in order to crack it. It’s one of the toughest exams in the country. Having said that, passing it with flying colors enables your application to stand out from the crowd. Through it, you can obtain any respectable career. Becoming an IPS officer not only gives you self-satisfaction but also gives you an opportunity to show your best. An IPS is the highest rank officer in the police department and is the second lawmaker after the judge. An aspirant has to face a lot of hurdles (exams and training) before getting this job. UPSC has prepared a step-by-step exam pattern which is given below and a candidate can apply for this post. Every obstacle has to be overcome to get it.

Age

Candidates from Nepal and Bhutan can also apply for the Indian Police Services exam. Any graduate candidate can apply for this exam. The age limit for IPS exam is 21 to 30 years. But SC / ST candidates can appear in this exam till the age of 35 years.

Education

To apply for this job, the candidate must be a graduate of a recognized university.

Physical Ability

  • Height: A minimum height of 165 cms is required for male candidates, while the minimum height for SC/ ST/ OBC candidates is 160 cms. Whereas, female candidates are required to have a minimum height of 150 cms and female candidates of ST / SC / OBC candidates are given a relaxation of 5 cms.
  • Chest: For male candidates of all categories, they should have chest of 84 cms and for female candidates, they should have chest of 79 cms.
  • Eye Vision: The eyesight should be between 6/6 and 6/9 and candidates with weak eyesight should have at least 6/12 and 6/9. No inherent night blindness.
  • Blood Pressure (High): Age 23 – 123; age 24 – 124; age 25 – 122; age 28 – 124; age 30 – 125; age 32 – 126; age 34 – 127.
  • Ears: Good hearing 1000-4000 frequency and normal ear cavity – hearing loss should not exceed 30 decibels.
  • Resonant: The candidate should not stutter while speaking.
  • Women should not be pregnant at the time of the medical test.

Written Test

To become an IPS officer, the most important level of the process is to crack the Civil Services Examination (CSE). Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Civil Services Examination every year which is conducted in 3 sessions. Hence, aspirants for this post have to clear all rounds of Civil Services Examination.

Additional Training (Government Training Centre)

After qualifying all these rounds, a candidate is sent for 3 months (July to September) training in Mysore for a foundation course. In the foundation course, the candidates are taught about the basic concept of the country’s constitution, history and politics.

Training in Hyderabad

After undergoing this training, candidates are sent for academic training at Hyderabad for a period of one year from October to September. During this training, they are given knowledge about investigation, forensic science, crime prevention, ethics of human rights etc.

Field Training

During this period they are also taken for outdoor training which includes parades, horse riding, swimming, climbing and training in the use of weapons. These are the basic training that is required to become an IPS officer.

Practical Training

After taking academic training in Hyderabad, they are sent for another training for 6 months, which is called practical training. In this training, candidates are taught how to write FIR and the work style of SP, CO, PAC, DGP HQ and CID units.
