NREGA: Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act
The full form of NREGA is “Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act”. Now it is called as MGNREGA. It is an Indian job guarantee scheme, enacted by legislation on August 25, 2005. This scheme applies to rural areas of all the Indian states and is controlled by the govt. of India. It is labour law and social security measure in India, which was introduced to guarantee the ‘right to work’ in rural areas of India. It is believed to be the world’s largest social project for the poor. The scheme provides a legal guarantee for one hundred days of employment in every financial year to adult members of any rural household willing to do unskilled manual work. Employment is to be provided within 5 km of an applicant’s residence, and minimum wages are to be paid. If work is not provided within 15 days of applying, applicants are entitled to an unemployment allowance.
NREGA Scheme Eligibility
- The person should be a citizen of India
- He should have completed 18 years of age at the time of application
- Applicant must belong to the local household or should apply to local Gram Panchayat
- Applicant should be ready for unskilled labour
