The full form of PTM is Parent-Teacher Meeting. PTM is a short meeting or conference between the parents and teachers of students to discuss a child’s progress at school and find solutions to academic or behavioral problems. Parent-Teacher Meeting (PTM) is held usually once or twice a year during progress reporting periods. They are brief meetings, lasting about 10-30 minutes. PTM is typically scheduled 1 to 2 months in advance. It supplements the information conveyed by report cards by focusing on students’ specific strengths and weaknesses in individual subjects and generalizing the level of inter-curricular skills and competencies. Some middle and high schools only request parent conferences to discuss problems.

The meetings aren’t that much easier for parents, who rush to squeeze them in on a workday or feel the teacher isn’t understanding their child. According to a 2008 study from the U.S. Department of Education and the National Center for Education Statistics, more than one in five parents reported that they didn’t regularly attend PTM. There’s possibly nothing more frustrating than parents who don’t come to a Parent-Teacher Meeting at all. Most schools set aside specific dates and times for PTM, but if school schedules conflict with family schedules, it’s worth the effort to find a mutually convenient time, or even schedule a phone or video conference. Because it is important for both the parties to know both sides of the child.
