The full form of DRDO is “Defence Research and Development Organisation“. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is an agency of the Government of India, charged with the military’s research and development, headquartered in New Delhi, India. It is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. It was formed in 1958 by the merger of the Technical Development Establishment and the Directorate of Technical Development and Production of the Indian Ordnance Factories with the Defence Science Organisation. A separate Department of Defence Research and Development was formed in 1980 which later on administered DRDO and its 50 laboratories/establishments.

DRDO focuses on enhancing self-reliance in Defence Systems and dedicatedly working towards design & development leading to production of world class weapon systems and equipment in accordance with the quantitative and qualitative requirements laid down by the three services viz. Army, Air Force and Navy. Several major projects for the development of armaments, light combat aircrafts, missiles, radars, electronic warfare systems etc are on hand and significant achievements have already been made in several such technologies. DRDO while striving to meet the requirements of Cutting edge weapons technology also provides ample benefits to the society at large by contributing to the nation building.

DRDO is a network of 52 laboratories which are deeply engaged in developing defence technologies and various areas of military technology, like armaments, electronics, combat vehicles, aeronautics, missiles, advanced computing and simulation, engineering systems, instrumentation, special materials, training, information systems, naval systems, life sciences and agriculture. Presently, the Organisation is backed by more than 5000 scientists belonging to the Defence Research & Development Service (DRDS) and about 25,000 technical, other scientific and supporting personnel. Most of the time the Defence Research Development Organisation was treated as if it was a vendor and the Army Headquarters or the Air Headquarters were the customers.
