VETO is not an acronym, it means “I forbid” in the Latin language. A veto is a constitutional right to reject a decision or proposal made by a lawmaking body. It is used in UNSC (United Nations Security Council) by permanent members (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) to block any resolution. The VETO power is controversial. Critics say the veto is the most undemocratic element of the United Nations, as well as the main cause of inaction on war crimes and crimes against humanity, as it effectively blocks UN action against permanent members and their allies. A single country can prevent a majority of the Security Council from taking any action. The permanent members also veto resolutions that criticize their own actions.
