In India, The full form of IAS is Indian Administrative Service. It is one of the most prestigious and top-rated services and is one of the three arms of the All India Services of the Government of India. Aspiring to be called an IAS officer is a dream who wants to contribute to the progress of the nation. IAS requires a lot of dedication and hard work. It is considered to be the toughest exam in India due to its highly competitive nature. History

  • In 1858 the HEICCS (East India Company’s Civil Service) was replaced by the Indian Civil Service (ICS), which became the highest civilian service in the British Raj between 1858 and 1947.
  • When India was partitioned after the British left in 1947, the Indian Civil Service was split between India and Pakistan. Indian ICS was renamed as Indian Administrative Service, while Pakistani ICS was renamed as Pakistan Administrative Service.
  • The modern Indian Administrative Service was created under Part XIV of the Constitution of India and Article 312(2) of the All India Services Act, 1951.

How to become an IAS officer?

There are three modes of recruitment in the Indian Administrative Service.

  • IAS officers can enter the IAS by clearing the Civil Services Examination, which is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Officers recruited in this way are called direct recruits.
  • Some IAS officers are also recruited from state civil services.
  • In rare cases, Recruitment is done from non-state civil service.

The ratio between direct recruitment and promotion is fixed at 2:1. All IAS officers, regardless of the mode of entry, are appointed by the President of India.

Eligibility Criteria

The following are the eligibility criteria to apply for this prestigious job:

  • Nationality: Candidate must be Indian Citizen or Nepal/Bhutan/Tibetan dependent who came to India before 1st January, 1962.
  • Age limit: Candidate age should be between 21 to 32 years in order to apply for UPSC..
  • Education: Candidates should possess Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification from a recognized Institute/University.
  • Number of attempts: Only 6 attempts are allowed to clear the exam.
