The full form of DPT is Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus. It is also called as DTP and DTwP. It is a class of combination vaccines given against three infectious diseases in humans: diphtheria, Pertussis, and tetanus (DPT). Diphtheria can cause breathing problems, heart failure, and paralysis. Before vaccines, diphtheria killed tens of thousands of children each year in the United States. Pertussis is also known as whooping cough, it makes coughing periods so severe that babies and children find it difficult to eat, drink, or breathe. It can cause pneumonia, seizures, brain damage, or death. Tetanus causes a painful tightening of the muscles. This can cause your jaw to become blocked, so you cannot open your mouth or swallow. About 1 in 5 people who get tetanus die. Most children vaccinated with DPT will be protected during childhood. Many more children would contract these diseases if we stopped vaccinating. The usual course of childhood immunization in the United States is five doses between two months and 15 years. For adults, Td boosters are recommended every ten years.
