What is the full form of ICMR?

ICMR: Indian Council of Medical Research

The full form of ICMR is Indian Council of Medical Research. It is the lead agency in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research in India. It is financed by the Govt. of India through the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and is one of the oldest medical research organizations in the world. It is based in New Delhi, India. As of March 2020, Dr. Balram Bhargava is the Secretary & Director General of ICMR.

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) promotes biomedical research in the country through intramural as well as extramural research. Over the decades, the base of extramural research and also its strategies have been expanded by the Council. Its 26 national institutes are dedicated to research on specific health topics such as COVID-19, tuberculosis, leprosy, cholera and diarrhoeal diseases, viral diseases including AIDS, malaria, kala-azar, vector control, nutrition, food & drug toxicology, reproduction, immuno-haematology, oncology, medical statistics, etc. Its vision is “Translating Research into Action for Improving the Health of the Population.”
