GIF: Graphics Interchange Format

The full form of GIF is Graphics Interchange Format. It is a bitmap image format that uses the .gif file extension. Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is a string of multiple bitmap files to create an animated image. It supports static and animated images. The main motto of its development is to develop a platform-independent image format. The GIF file was developed by a team at the bulletin board service (BBS) provider CompuServe, led by American computer scientist Steve Wilhite on June 15, 1987. It is an 8-bit format, meaning the maximum number of colors supported by the format is 256, these colors cannot be mixed to create new colors. GIF images are compressed using the Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) lossless data compression technique. This technique is used to reduce the file size without degrading the quality of the image. GIF supports transparent backgrounds, so it can be used to mix GIF files with the website’s background colors. It can be used in games.
