JPG/JPEG: Joint Photographic Experts Group
The full form of JPG/JPEG is Joint Photographic Experts Group. It is a joint working group of the International Standardization Organization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that created the standard in 1992. JPEG has been the most used image compression standard in the world and the most used digital image format. It is a standard method to compress graphic images. It is most often used with the filename extension .jpg or .jpeg. The basis of JPEG is the discrete cosine transform (DCT), a lossy image compression technique that was proposed by Nasir Ahmed in 1972. It supports a maximum image size of 65535×65535 pixels.
JPEG is a common lossy compression method for digital images, especially for images produced by digital photography. It is mainly used to send photographs on the Internet due to its excellent compression technique. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing selectable compensation between storage size and image quality. JPEG generally achieves 10: 1 compression with little noticeable loss in image quality. JPG/JPEG is the most common image format used by digital cameras and other photographic image capture devices. It is the most common format for storing and transmitting photographic images on the World Wide Web (WWW).
