The full form of TMT is Thermo-Mechanically Treated. Thermo-mechanically treated (TMT) steel involves the simultaneous application to the steel of heating and cooling cycles combined with some type of deformation. Thermomechanical processing is a metallurgical process that combines the process of mechanical or plastic deformation, such as compression or forging, rolling, etc. with thermal processes such as heat treatment, water cooling, heating and cooling at different speeds in a single process. TMT has a tough outer core and a soft inner core.

Manufacturing Process of TMT

The first stage of the manufacturing process involves passing the steel bars through a rolling mill. Later, these rolled steel bars are passed through the Tempcore water cooling system again. When the steel bars pass through the water cooling system, the water pressure is optimized. Sudden temperament and drastic temperature change harden the outer layer of the steel bar, making it super strong and durable.

Once this process is finished, TMT bars are subject to atmospheric cooling. This is done to match the temperature difference between the soft inner core and the tough outer core.

Once the TMT bar cools, it slowly becomes a mass of ferrite-perlite. The inner core remains soft, providing the TMT bar with great tensile strength and elongation point. This design is exclusive to TMT bars and offers superior ductility to bars. In addition, this unique manufacturing technique and the absence of cold stress make this bar resistant to corrosion and increases its weldability.
